Types of Financial Aid and Scholarships

Finding assistance to pay for your education can be daunting. We strive to clearly lay out your options so that you can make an informed decision that is best suited to your situation. The financial aid awarded will be primarily needs based, however we do offer several scholarship opportunities that are merit based as well.

Pell Grant

The Pell Grant is a need-based grant provided by the federal government to students who lack the financial means to attend college. Your eligibility for this grant depends on a range of criteria including the federal assessment of your financial need, the cost of our tuition, your academic year, and your satisfactory academic progress. Funds awarded through a Pell Grant do not need to be repaid.

Stafford Loan (Subsidized)

The Stafford Loan is a need-based, low-interest loan offered through the federal government. It comes in two forms, subsidized and unsubsidized. If you are awarded the subsidized Stafford Loan, the government covers the interest on the loan during the course of your education. Students may choose to defer payment of the loan until after they complete their apprenticeship. Should you choose to defer, you will be responsible for the interest accrued during your apprenticeship.

Stafford Loan (Unsubsidized)

The unsubsidized Stafford Loan is available online to independent students. This loan is not based upon financial need. Unlike the subsidized loan, the government will not cover the cost of interest while you are in school. You will begin paying the interest on the loan during your education. However, you may choose to defer the interest until after graduation, but the interest will be capitalized and added to the original loan cost, increasing your payments over time.

The PLUS Plan

The PLUS Plan is a loan that parents can take out to cover the cost of their dependent child’s education. Through this program, parents are allowed to borrow money on their dependent’s behalf. Interest begins to accrue from the moment the funds are disbursed and given to the student to use towards their tuition and fees. Payment is the responsibility of the borrower. In most cases, parents will repay the cost of this loan instead of students. Payment of interest may be deferred until after the student graduates.

Alternative Private Loans

If your financial aid package does not sufficiently cover the cost of your tuition, you make choose to take out alternative loans from separate banks and other financial institutions. These will not have the low interest rates included on the federally funded loans listed above. To take out a private loan, students must apply directly to the banks themselves. Banks will review your credit history or the history of your co-applicant before setting the terms of the loan.

Scholarships are a form of financial aid that do not need to be repaid. For mortuary science students, scholarships are available through many funeral service organizations. These scholarships can be both need and merit based. Contact our Financial Aid Officer to learn more about your scholarship options and to gather the appropriate forms and applications.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

All financial aid applications begin with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. Once you fill out and submit this form, your financial resources and need will be assessed by the federal government and sent to Worsham College.

We recommend that all students fill out the FAFSA form. For students seeking a federal Pell Grant, this is also a requirement. Filling out the FAFSA does not force you to take out a loan, but it is an important first step for students who need financial aid. Applications for Stafford Loans and Parent PLUS loans can be found at the Federal Student Loan website.

Scholarships do not require a FAFSA and instead rely on separate applications. Contact us to learn more about your scholarship opportunities. If there are other funeral service organizations in your area, we encourage you to reach out to them as well.

Veterans Benefits

We are proud to support our men and women in uniform who have served our country. We are fully approved for granting educational benefits to veterans and other eligible persons.

For veterans to receive benefits, you must maintain an average grade of 75 or better in all courses while you attend Worsham College. If your average should fall below 75, you will be placed on academic probation and will have one quarter to redeem your overall average. If your average is not improved in one quarter, your benefits may be interrupted by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Additional Information on Loans

Worsham College has a Net Price Calculator to estimate the projected cost of education. This calculator creates an estimate based on cost of attendance and financial aid provided to students in a previous year. The student’s FASFA results will create student specific results however the Net Price Calculator will assist in general education cost estimation.

If loans are part of your financial aid package at Worsham, you must sign a promissory note. This is a legally binding obligation to repay the loan according to the stated conditions and is required for all students receiving loans.

At Worsham College, we have mandatory loan counseling upon enrollment into the loan program and again before graduation to discuss best methods for managing and repaying your loans. This counseling is designed to help you better understand your loans and how to navigate their repayment going forward.

Students with financial aid packages must maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout their time at Worsham.

Financial Aid for International Students

Though Federal financial aid packages are not available to international students, various scholarships and loans are still a possible route to help you pay for the cost of your funeral service education. Please contact us to learn more about financial aid options for international students.
